The target here is 1200 × 800 px: a landscape (wide) 3:2 image of 0.96 megapixels. The preset fills in both dimensions for you, so you only need to add the photo and download the result.
Because the output size is fixed, the photo's own shape matters: if it is not 3:2, you either crop it or it gets distorted. The table below shows how much each common photo shape loses.
| Output size | 1200 × 800 px |
|---|---|
| Aspect ratio | 3:2 (landscape) |
| Total pixels | 960,000 (0.96 MP) |
| Prints at 300 DPI | 4 × 2.7 in (10.2 × 6.8 cm) |
Fitting a photo into 1200 × 800 px
Resizing to a fixed width and height only gives a clean result when the photo has the same shape as the target. A shape mismatch has two outcomes: the picture is stretched, or part of it is cropped. Crop first, then resize, so you decide what is cut. This is how much of each common photo would be lost to fill 3:2:
| Starting photo | Cropped away to fill the shape |
|---|---|
| Phone photo (4000 × 3000, 4:3) | About 11% of the image |
| DSLR photo (6000 × 4000, 3:2) | Nothing: same shape |
| Video frame (1920 × 1080, 16:9) | About 16% of the image |
| Portrait phone photo (3000 × 4000, 3:4) | About 50% of the image |
Size, quality and file weight
960,000 pixels saved as a JPG at web quality typically weigh about 93.75 KB to 281.25 KB, depending on how much detail the picture contains. Flat graphics and screenshots saved as PNG compress very well when colors are simple, and poorly when they contain photographic gradients.
For photos, JPG or WebP are good choices; for logos, text or transparency, PNG keeps edges clean.
How large can it be printed?
These figures follow from the pixel count: print size = pixels ÷ DPI. Going above the 300 DPI row gives no visible benefit; going below it looks softer.
| Quality | DPI | Print size |
|---|---|---|
| Screen-resolution draft | 72 | 16.7 × 11.1 in (42.3 × 28.2 cm) |
| Acceptable for posters | 150 | 8 × 5.3 in (20.3 × 13.5 cm) |
| Photo quality | 300 | 4 × 2.7 in (10.2 × 6.8 cm) |
How to resize an image for Thumbor Image Service 1200x800
- Add your image. Select a photo or drag it onto the box above. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC and BMP files are accepted, and the file stays on your device.
- Crop to 3:2 (recommended). The output is 1200 × 800 px, a 3:2 shape. Cropping to that shape first with the built-in Crop tool decides what stays in frame and avoids distortion.
- Confirm the size and format. The preset fills in 1200 × 800 px. Choose JPG for photos or PNG for graphics with sharp edges or transparency.
- Download the resized image. Click resize and save the file. The result uses Lanczos-3 resampling, which keeps edges clean when scaling down.
